My life as a teacher
I´m teaching home economic at Södra Ängby school in Bromma, which is located
northwest of Stockholm, Sweden. Being a home economic teacher in this school is a very
intensive and stimulating job, as there is a very positive view on the subject from the staff as well as from colleagues.
Home economic runs like a red thread through the different grades. A deepening of
the subject is offered the students under a subject called ”Students choice”.
This subject can be chosen during all the different grades at school.
During the last three years of school, grade 7-9,
the students can join MATAB (foodco). MATAB is our schools own little company
which is permeated with a spirit of entrepreneuring.
”Learning by eating!” ("Lära genom att äta") is the individual-suited working method I use during all my lessons.
This means that I, to as large extend as possible, assume each and every students different possibilities
when it comes to a learning of the subject and above all, in the more
theoretical parts.
During 30% of my total working hours at school I have leave of absence and work with schooldevelopment questions.
Among other things I travel to different schools and make speeches about working methods: ”Learning by eating!”
which is an individual suited and student-controlled teaching in home economic.
Since many years I have developed entrepreneuring at our school. This does not mean
I start companies within the school, but how students can solve different problems in their learning.
An entrepreneuring learning is, in other words, that students learn to work from their own ideas
and to reflect on things they themselves and others take for garanted.
THEY LEARN TO LEARN!

The importance of food related to health is more and more emphasized. Research has proven quite obviously the connection between different deseases and eating habits. Bad eating habits are, apart from smoking, important reasons for the fact that heart- and vascular diseases and cancer are great health problems. I truly believe that home economic should convey the knowledges we have, of course with care and patience. Not frighten or make demands that the students should change their eating habits. Eating habits are founded in the homes which means that such an initiative for a real change of eating habits must come from the student himself with support and co-operation with homes. The aim and the presentation of my teaching in home economic is to engage and motivate the students towards a proper eating. I have therefore, since a few years back, endeavoured to develop the analysing ability of the students that concerns their eating. The teaching has partly been worked out as a more project-concentrated way of working under different themes, where each student is allowed to work with tasks from his own interest and with his own abilities. The method for this has been given the ringing banner: "LEARNING BY EATING!" Things like co-operation, community of work, all ocation of tasks and equality must of course be considered. This is what is unique with the home economics and will always be in the future in my teaching institution. Welcome to surf around with me and have a look about "Learning by eating!" and have a look at home economics in Södra Ängby school and how we had deformed our education! |

MATAB
MATAB is Södra Ängby schools own little "company" (FOODCOM) wich is run by us who have chosen this as the students own "choice". We work with our company one day per week/school-year and then for 120 minutes. It is a popular choice at our school during the 7th, 8th and 9th grades. All together we are 95 students. MATAB was founded in 1988 and has been going for many years now. MATAB is a joint-stock company where we, the students, own half of all the shares. The home economic own the other half. At shareholders meeting, once per term, we determine and decide how our organisation is going to be the coming term. We make different choices for different areas of responsibilities. Below you can see what different choices are to be made ORGANISING PLAN:
